: Hi folks- I need some suggestions - I purchased a hatchling Female Eastern 6/24/2001 - She shed on 6/29/2001 - I have tried several times with pinkies &/or fuzzy mice. No luck - Tried scenting the pinkie rubbing it against a desert iguana and I also tried scenting against a tree boa. I don't have a source for baby snakes as a possible option - Any ideas?
: Thanks, Mark
Mark,
Welcome to the wonderfull world of the eastern Indigo snake!!
Your snake just shed not to long ago, your timetable to get it to eat is not realistic. I know just how you feel...
My first hatchlings frustrated me to no end...
Eastern Indigos eat when they are good and ready to, not when we plan them too.
Drop the desert iguana thing, also drop the tree boa thing, both of which would not be natural pey items.
try this first
Put a small hidebox in the cage or box...offer the food item INSIDE the box, they like seclusion.
Offer them live goldfish, both in a bowl in their box, in the hidebox, and lastly flopping around the bottem of the cage.
These will die and rot, stinking up your cage and room.
this is NATURAL
Next try pinkis rubbed in goldfish.
And lastly, try trout frozen trout preferably rank and old , rub this on the pinky also.
Since you have no access to baby snakes this is my recommendation.
be patient, they can hold out for MONTHS without eating.
Dont panic, in time they will eat.
read my article in Reptile and ampbinan magazine (August) or e-mail me if you need more help.
