I keep both species and in my opinion there is no comparison. Indigos are thicker bodied and more attractive with their reddish chins. More importantly, indigos are much more aware of their surroundings. Black milks are fine snakes, but they are still just milk snakes. Indigos are active, diurnal snakes that depend upon awareness of their habitat to survive. Black milks are more nocturnal and spend most of their time hidden from sight in true milk snake fashion. In terms of their behavior and feeding habits, indigos are similar to some cobras.
