Sounds like the pet store guy probably has his hands in a lot of cages and is perhaps encouraging a feeding response. My Eastern goes NUTS when I go in after him, but once he realizes I don't smell like anything 'edible' he backs off and gets real mellow. Being that indigos eat other snakes, the idea of 'not handling rodents' isn't good enuff - I get attitude if I don't wash my hands after handling another snake (I know, I know I shouldn't do that anyway :) but sometimes it just happens) so just enjoy your snake!
