In Reply to: Dan, regarding your thoughts on FL permits... posted by Dean Alessandrini on April 23, 2001 at 09:20:31:

: you make some very good points, and I agree with most. I was at St. Augustine Alligator farm several years ago and one of their snake keepers advised they could not get a permit to keep / display an Eastern Indigo. I don't understand the logic here. The public needs to be educated. It seems the goals are conflicting with the ultimate objective...saving the species from extinction. Since the govenment agencies both on the state and federal levels do not have the man power to enforce the regulations, their solution is to simply make it illegal. that way it's cut and dry.

: Adding to the problem is the lack of respect that I've seen for herpetoculturists in the wildlife biologist / ecologist community. They tend to see us as money driven low-lifes who recklessly exploit wildife with no consideration of the reprocussions. The fact that hybridization, and breeding for "mutant" strains...etc is now so rampant in the herpetocultual community doesn't help. I think there is a real fear that hybridized/ albino/ reverse /zig-zag zipper/ choclate-chip cookie dough blizzard indigos that carry an african pathogen b/c they were caged near a ball python will be created and relased, either accidentally or on purpose.

: There is a lot of reasons. The problem is...until they see a cut and dry BENEFIT to allowing the private sector to keep and breed the snakes in captivity, they certainly are not going to entertain changing the law, and hiring more agents to help enforce regulations, perform spot "checks" etc.

: I think that it is very important that we, as responsible herp enthusiasts, make an effort to bridge the gap between ourselves and the scientific community. That's one of the things I'm trying to do with the group at Kennedy Space center. We are thousands strong, and MOST of us are responsible, conservation oriented people who would like to do what we can to help.

: Unfortunatly, there ARE many herpetoculturists who ARE money driven sacks of poop who care nothing about the ecology of the animals.
