: Could any one tell me how long it takes for an indigo to reach full size, I have a pair captive bred 98, they are 4.5 ft long, what size should they be ready to breed, hope someone can help regards Steve
Steve,
I would not bred the female at less than 6 ft. at smaller sizes eggbinding can and often does occur. The eggs are very large and take up a huge amount of the snakes calcium stores. Full size for an Eastern Indigo can be upwards of 9 ft+. My male is about 7 ft 3 inches as of this writing, but he is 20 years old as of this writing, and he continues to grow, albeit in much slower increments than when he was younger.
I beleive a lot of the growth is tied in with the genetic predisposition of the parents to be large and the conditions the snake is kept in. I have known people to raise E. indigos to 6 ft in 2 yrs time, but the manner in which they did it,i.e. "power-feeding" is not good for the snake at all and will definetly shorten it's lifespan.
Hope this helps, any other questions, feel free to e-mail me at FA19@excite.com.
Fred
