I lived in California most of my life and I've been through more earthquakes here in Seattle. One reason earthquakes are scarrier here is that it brings on fear that it will wake up a volcano.
I live equidistant between Mt. Baker and Mt Rainier. 2 quiet, but still very much alive and very big volcanos. Both have steam vents on top that keep the summits clear of snow (They are the 2 snowiest mountains on earth).
There is evidence of mud flows from Mt Rainier within the city limits of Seattle. THAT is scary.
