Just recently I had the chance to talk to Fred Albury, and discuss some of the many ways that keepers of indigos' attempt to get their charges to eat. In my own brief experience with the keeping of Drymarchon c.couperi, I had the chance to discover some interesting facts regarding feeding recalcitrant neonates. In my attempts at feeding the babies their first meals , I had experienced many of the same dissapointing first attempts and second and third attempts with the same type of dissapointing results that many of you have had. In the search for the perfect meal for my young charges,I discovered ,that the idea of using other snake species eggs to scent pinkies must be the perfect solution and or answer to the problem ( Indigos' being ophiophagous ) . And so it came about that it actually became the perfect scenting medium for pinks . No sooner than I had placed a scented pinkie in front of the Indigos' face , did it grab it with the grit and ferocity that they are known for . The technique is simple . If you are breeding other snakes (colubrids), the thing to do is save the eggs , and freeze them in ziplog bags ( types of colubrids used : Lampropeltis spp, Elaphe spp ). when you need to feed your Indigo neonate , you thaw an egg and dip a pinkie into the egg and coat the pink with the amniotic fluid contained in the egg. I tell you it worked like a charm the first time around. After doing this for some time (3-4 feedings) , you can begin to wean your babies from the egg dip . Try this technique , it should give you some very surprising results . good luck.
