For the past few weeks I've been posting updates on the import yellowtail that I purchased at the Columbus, OH reptile expo.
I had been having trouble getting him feeding. The importer told me that he came out of Guyana, so I checked www.weather.com for Georgetown, Guyana. The temps were about accurate for the setup I had (lows in the low 70's, highs in the mid to upper 80's) but I noticed that the relative humidity was VERY high. (from about 70-90%) I decided to crank up the humidity. I placed a large pan of water directly under the heat lamp...and of course the humidity in the cage soured. The following day, a waved a f/t chick on tongs in front of him and he struck (more out of anger than feeding response). A few minutes later I checked the cage and it was gone. I did the same again and he ate a second. I left it at that.
It seemd the humidity was a key factor. I replacd the newspaper bedding with moist cypress mulch to keep the humidiy levels high.
...Just thought I'd share.
