: I just pick up a super nice male yellowtail at the Columbus swap.
: It's a recent import...and I try to stick to cb animals, but I couldn't resist this guy. It's flawlwss and has decent bodyweight...I'm looking for thoughts to get him started feeding.
: I keep a good stash od frozen chicks, and my Indigos LOVE them, so I thought I'd try them first...no interest at all. He's still a little nervous of course, but he's in a very undisturbed room with a good hiding place...I'm keeping him about 80 deg. Think I should try fish? Or maybe something live to get him going?
: Any thoughts would be appreciated!

dean-- not to worry. once he adjusts himself he'll eat just fine. appetite will be off at this time of year anyway. give him a week[or a little less] and try live, small mice. he should definitely take these, but if he doesn't, cool him off for the remainder of the season. eighty degress is actually a little high for this species. summer to winter ranges should be around 78 to 65. they don't like it too warm. melanurus is the same way. they will both regurgitate if held in the eighties too long. ambient room temp [all year] is best unless you're trying to feed thru the winter. they do like fish. in fact it seems to set off the breeding urge even heavier than normal if fed fish in the fall. it really seems to excite them. good luck, i think you will discover that this species is not as demanding as couperi. dan
