:I have 3 horned lizards that all share the same enclosure. Two of which are coastal and one a regal. The two coastals have these little black, round, hard shelled bugs that gather just around the tender part of the eyelids. My regal does not have them and never has. What are they? And, besides pulling them off, is there anything I can do to eradicate them?
:First off, you have protected species. Both the Coast HLs and the Regal are protected unless you have permits. The Coast HLs are a Species of Special Concern and are also protected under CITES II. Regals are protected by Arizona Species protection and permits are required (or a valid State Game License). The "bugs" are mites and need to be removed very carefully with water and Q-tips. The use of any mite control, such as Mite RX, can be used if is very dilute. Dilute 1/10 of recommended. You will also have to take care of mite eggs on the HLs also. The two species should not be kept in the same enclosure. You do not find these species sharing the same habitats in natural distribution. Lester G. Milroy III
