Chuck is on the right path. You have to keep in mind, in the realm of evolution, HLs have developed the ability to tolerate formic acid, not a need for it.
If you quiz enough keepers, you find those who have been the most successful you outdoor enclosures for at least part of the year. This is regardless of diet. Those who use indoor enclosures exclusively tend to have a poor track record after a couple of years.
Almost everyone who has scoffed at me about keeping HLs due to their own experiences used indoor enclosures.
Just a quick field observation too. High elevation (9K+) short horneds have very little access to ants in some of the areas I have observed them. Are they buying the spray?
