I was bitten by one of my eastern hognoses about a week ago (see my post below). I was actually scenting pinkies with toads and hand feeding my hog. It must have mistaken my finger. I was sleepy and slept most of the day but it may have been from my hangover. I saw no localized reactions. Maybe it is because the hog ate a pinkie first and used all its venom on that.
:is it true that western hognoses are "mildly venomous"? i get the impression that it is, as i look things up, but my real question is, how big of a deal is it? is it kind of like certain other venomous animals that dont really do much unless you are alergic? also, what temps do they need and what size enclosure is good for one(as a pet, not a breeder)? thank you

:From what I have read hognoses are mildly venemous, but it is not a big deal at all. They have rear fangs, which make it difficult for them to bite you. Also biting is not one of their defense mechanisms. Firstly they puff up and hiss. If that fails they may (mine never has) strike, but it is with a closed mouth. Then they will play dead. Not a threatening snake at all. I can't remember where I read this, but a guy told a story where he had to seriously aggravate his hognose for an extended period of time before it bite him, and then it only had some mild swelling. Nothing major at all and only after some serious aggravation (he was trying to get the snake to bite him). I keep my hog in a 10 gallon, but she is not very large - maybe 8-10 inches.
