If you buy mice in bulk you can get them as cheap as 50 cents a piece. I do not think that it is cost prohibitive to feed exclusively mice.
Search through the forum, many have mentioned lately that once you go mice you can never go back. Hognoses can be finicky eaters just like little kids. If toads are the hognoses chocolate, they will want it all the time instead of the mice/apple they should be eating.
Also, the abundance of toads around your place is no invitation for their collection. Amphibian populations are highly variable, they need those numbers just to have enough to breed the following year. Toads can not survive at low population numbers because of the extreme pressures on their species.
Besides it only takes one exposure to introduce parasites.
Your hognose will never know anything different if you feed it mice its entire life, and there won't be any risks of regrets.
