The best solution to use for this type of preparation is called Pampels Solution. It's a mixture that has ethyl alcohol and formalin and several other things in it. It can be purchased from Bio Quip Products in Calif. They are mostly concerned with insects but have other stuff as well.
If you want to reduce it to a skeliton, skin it carfully to not disturb and bones. Put it in a container that is very sealable. You can buy Dermestid beatles from Conneticut Valley Supply and large quanities (Bio Quip may have these also). The beatles will strip the bones clean. Don't let the beatles out. Kill them in the jar before you open the container.
