Could anybody help me I.D. this snake?

I was mowing the yard a little while ago and saw a small snake just before it would have become little bits of scales and icky stuff, but have no idea what it is.

I would guess it is about 8 inches long and maybe the width of a pencil at it's widest point. the top of it's head is black, with smaller black dots going down the length of it's body, gradually getting smaller. The background color is a gray (slightly brown( color, and the belly is a light gray with no markings. The head is shaped a lot like a garter snake's.

Also, the snake was caught in central missouri.
