If you're concerned about smell I would use newsprint if you don't like the 'pet shop' smell... Most people don't notice it because they've been around them a while, but I hear people constantly saying the aspen bedding I use makes my snake room smell like a pet shop. As for the snakes themselves, generally not stinky animals.
