I can't think of anything that would be comming from the aspen that you would describe as very small black specks. I think you've got mites. Look in the water bowl, that is where I usually discover them first usually.
Try putting you snake in a five gallon bucket with 3 or 4 inches of warm water. The black specks will float to the top, look like pepper.
That may not be the answer you wanted to hear, but I think that is probably the case.
