Problem is not much is known about them. As for a book I suggest looking in the reptile and amphibian atlas. Maybe you should try cyprus mulch. He should shed like a snake amd be eating soon. If he doesn't shed by Saturday try doing it by hand. Have you treated him for parasites yet? If not I suggest doing it. How damp is the dirt it shouldn't be that moist, it should be rather dry except for the bottom inch or so.
