well, i got a crested gecko, and i use red light. for sure he does notice it, but his pupils are much more opened with red or blue light than they would be with other light sources. i also tried blue and red, but i finally stayed with the red bulb because i can watch him easier with it.

one more thing is, that they REALLY NEED some small source of light (child light) in their room, otherwise they arent able to see and hunt, because as you mentioned before they normally got moonlight in nature.
