THE HINDU (New Delhi, India) 25 April 03 Shepherd falls prey to crocodile
Bijapur: In a gruesome incident, a shepherd fell prey to a crocodile at Bennur Rehabilitation Centre in Bagalkot taluk. The incident occurred on Wednesday.
Police gave the name of the victim as Giriappa Krishnappa Chalavadi (35). Tragedy struck when Giriappa and his brother, Lakkappa, took sheep to the Ghataprabha to make them drink water. The brothers also entered the river where the water was knee deep.
All of a sudden, a crocodile got a grip on Giriappa's leg. As he screamed for help, Lakkappa made a vain bid to rescue his brother.
Giriappa was overpowered by the reptile. Lakkappa and a few labourers, who were lifting sand nearby, made another effort to save Giriappa, but it was fruitless.
Shocked by the incident, people in the surrounding villages have urged the Bagalkot District administration to fence the river stretches where people and domestic animals go to quench their thirst, or clear the river of crocodiles.
Though there have been incidents of animals falling prey to crocodiles in the river, this was the first time in recent memory of a person falling prey to the reptile.
