SOIL: Mix 9 parts of play sand, 9 parts potting soil(peat), and 2 parts tree bark.
ENVIRONMENT:
1 Garter snakes need a dry environment, but also enjoy basking in water. Put a water bowl in the tank, that is big enough for the snake to coil up in comfortably. Clean it as soon as you notice any food or refuse.
2 Give the snake a dark place to hide, as well as a place to bask in the sun, rocks etc..
3 Do not keep the snake in direct sunlight!!!!!!!!!!!!A small amount wont hurt it, but these snakes thrive at 76-84 degrees F, and usually eat in the cool part of the afternoon.
4 This winter you will need to get your garter snake a heat rock. Most pet stores have them, for around $15.00.
FEED: a variety of foods is best for a healthy snake. Garter snakes have been known to eat a variety of small fish, insects and reptiles: small frogs, eathworms(stay away from red striped wigglers, which are sold at many bait shops, they may be too acidic), wax worms, white worms(grubs), and a variety of insects. Make sure that all worms come from pesticide-free soil!
You may also want to invest in a vitamin supplement, from the pet store for snakes, within the next few months.
