I wouldn't suggest Ribbon Snakes as good "beginner" snakes. They are almost always wild-caught (parasites etc.) and they don't really ever adjust to being held. They occassionally don't feed well on fish in captivity and hold out for frogs and tadpoles.
The best beginner snake would be a captive-bred Corn Snake, hands down. They're pretty, cheap, tame, and easy. If it's a striped snake you want, I'd suggest a captive-bred and started Common Garter Snake (T. sirtalis) or Plains Garter Snake (T. radix).
