General care for a common garter snake (wild)?

A maintenance man found a small common garter at my work. Since the local temp here in New england lately is typically 10 dregees F, I can't let him out.
I'm planning on releasing him come warmer weather...maybe a soft release (he seems VERY calm towards people).

All I have unfortunately is a small 5 gallon tank. Will this be ok as a temporary measure? What else should I put in it?
