Should I be separating my males and females?

Hi All, I read in a post below how someone found a female that had be clasped to death -this scares me since I've got my males and females (American Toads) together. Should I have them separated? I do want to breed them and even though I've taken some small steps to persuade them to breed they have not. No singing either. Breeding isn't necessary, just thought it would be neat but if there is a large risk of death to my females then I don't want that. How big is that risk and should I have them in separate cages? Thanks again! -Laurah
