::I have three Christmas toads (Bufo variegatus; also called Chilean or lemon toads) that I bought as recently metamorphosed juveniles on 6/5/01. I've kept them on a good diet, and all three are now 2 1/4" to 2 1/2" SVL, which is larger than most sizes reported for their species. I decided to try to breed them this year, although I hadn't really cycled them. They're in a 15 gallon long tank with "rain" that comes on from time to time and water and rocks. One toad, obviously a male, developed bright colors and breeding pads on his hands. I'll see if I can get some pics. Out of the other two, one appears to be male and the other female, just based on coloration, and both of the ones that I think are male made a slight release call when picked up. However, the female is slightly smaller, which is unusual.
::Unfortunately, no calling has been heard. What else should I do? Just a note: these toads one of the southernmost amphibian species, from southern Peru to Tierra del Fuego at the tip of South America. I believe the climate consists of long wet winters and short dry summers, if that helps.
