First the genus Phyllobates is the most toxic frogs. The species in decending order of toxicity are P. terribilis, P. aurotaenia, P.bicolor, P. vittatus, and P. lugubris.
Second, all dart frogs are toxic but only the Phyllobates (and only the first three) can kill people, the others are very bad tasting. There are three different kinds of toxins produced by dart frogs. The toxins are all neurotoxins that are formed by simple protiens that block neurons. The first is Histrotoxin, which is produced by all dart frogs, except the Phyllobates, and is the only one that is produced by Epipedobates, Minyobates, and Dendrobates histronicus and its allies. The second is Pumiliotoxin and is produced in addition to Histrotoxin in all Dendrobates except in D. histronicus and its allies. The thrid is only found in Phyllobates, it is Bactratoxin. It is the most deadly one found in frogs. All of these toxins are believed to be based on the frogs diet. Therefore they are not present in captivity.
