Spectacular aberrant California Newt photos!

A friend of mine found this animal (and it's normal mate) in the Los Angeles area. It's already been released, and the female was gravid, so maybe someday we can find more like this spectacular male.

Has anyone here seen anything like this specimen, and/or have insight on what this pattern is? Is it hypomelanistic for instance?
