new to herpin' and have some questions

i live in southern california. is there a season(or a better time of year or something) to start looking for snakes? and does that vary on species? what method is best used, there is a guy at work that drives backroads around dusk. when i am hiking do i just look under rocks and in cracks? and lastly is there a limit on a days hunt or anything illegal to collect?

also is there a field guided for this?
