Dallas/Fort Worth and San Antonio Herping

My son and I will be visiting the DFW area in mid April. Looking to observe local herps and possibly collect banded geckos. I've heard this may not be a good place for bandeds but I will be driving to San Antonio at some point and could check places in between. Any help would be greatly appreciated (ie - herps to expect, places to visit, shops to purchase a hook, etc.).
