It's not so much the taking of the pictures, but the fact that to do so, you have to be looking for the retiles in the first place... and that's where they are strict. If a ranger saw you and said nothing, then you were lucky. They are tough down there... though admittedly, uncommon. You very rarely see them. But the rare time they see you, they're trouble.

Just be careful when in the area. The binoculars are are good idea... but when you're lifting boards and tin in a trash heap, it's gonna be tough to convince them you're birdwatching.
