Hmmm....hard to settle on five. These weren't necessarily the rarest or most desirable, but probably among the most memorable:
1. 5' Black Ratsnake - my first snake caught while expressly looking for snakes, Little Rock, Arkansas in 1966 at the age of 13. Much more snake than I was prepared for!
2. Yellow phase C. horridus - my first ever rattlesnake, found under a rock on a hillside in Adams County, Ohio, 1976
3. L. alterna - my first (and only) alterna, found on Boy Scout Rd 30 minutes into the first night of my first trip out west. Thought to myself, "Hell, this is easy!". Wrong.
4. Midland Mud Salamanders - two adult specimens found under the same log, deep in the dark woods of Shawnee State Forest in southern Ohio. An eye-popping scene I'll never forget.
5. L.g. nigra - not particularly spectacular, but it took a long time to find the first one, so it stands out. Southern Ohio in 1977.
