5. first LA milk snake - 1989 Sabine National Forest, TX. Not a rare snake, but I spent 7 years looking (albeit in suboptimal habitat)

4. two juvenile file snakes (Achrochordus granulatus). Two newborns I found while snorkeling in some grassy flats on the east coast of Borneo. Our boat driver near jumped out of his skin when I climbed back into the boat with these in my hands (they had never heard of a non-venomous sea dwelling snake - and sea snakes were very common there).

3. first alterna - Juno Road, Memorial Day, 2000. Found before sunset. I thought it was a Great Plains rat when I first saw it on the road ahead and just casually pulled up next to it and looked at it out the window.

2. first pyro - Chiricahuas, 2001 (after many years of looking). Under a very small log in the middle of the trail. I only nonchalantly turned it out of habit.

1. first Boa constrictor - neonate found coiled at face level in a mangrove near Veracruz Mexico in 1987. I found 5 more roadhunting that night, but that first "in the field" experience was so much cooler.
