This is pretty arbitrary; I'm factoring in the memories, unexpectedness, quality of the place and other intangibles.

5) the baby red racer I caught when I was a kid ~1978. The first snake I kept -- had it for about a year, fed it utas. Eventually it escaped.

4) Mountain Yellow-Legged frogs ~1990 at a high Siera lake. I used hike in the Sierras a bunch and had only seen one R.muscosa before. This lake had lots of them. Astounding. I plan on checking up on them someday.

3) Timber Rattlesnakes in Ohio April 2002. Hadn't seen a wild crotalus in about 6 years.

2) A rosy boa ~1992 in Joshua Tree stetched out in broad daylight in the middle of the trail to 49 Palms Oasis.

1) A panamint speckled rattler near Independence CA ~1987. A whiptail ran off the trail and out of view. It unexpectedly ran back onto the trail, went into convulsions, and dropped dead. Inspection of the unfortunate lizard revealed 2 telltale punctures in its chest. After considerable visual inspection, I finally spotted the cause of the lizards demise, cryptically lurking on the rocky hillside.
