The Arroyo Seco River flows out of the mountains of the Ventana Wilderness down to the valley near Soledad. I forget the names of the trails, but there's a big National Forest service campground called Arroyo Seco, and a closed road that leads from there to a trail 15 or 20 miles into the Ventana/Big Sur interior. We saw a huge banded cal king in the poison oak by a swimming hole where that trail crosses the river, and watched it crawl up the hill. This was the end of Memorial Day weekend last year, on the way out from an awful death-march backpacking trip. I tried to take photos of it, but found I'd reached the end of my roll of film! Still, we got to watch it for a while.
