What do I feed growing rats, these shrank!!!

I bought some rats about a month ago and I have fed them mainly on dog food and they seem to have gotten smaller. I dispatched one and looked at him, he was skin and bones! I keep their food bowl full at all times, I don't know what I did wrong!
What do you feed your large rats? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
