:anybody have any experience with handling and keeping australian tiger snakes? I've seen australian elapids on sale at zoological imports but never one of these

Probably the reason you haven't seen any tigers is because continental Australia strictly forbids ANY exportation of any of their wildlife. I guess that's not just continental, because you won't find any snakes from Tazmania either. You've probably never seen any 'true' Aussie elapids for sale, and if you have, you've seen something very illegal. The Papuan taipans, eastern browns, king browns, and blacksnakes that are pretty often seen all come from the island of Papua New Guinea. That island is not under Australian control and exports a number of snakes. Anyway, hope this helps a little.
