Question regarding venom

I am interested in peoples oppinions on the subject of building venom immunities. I have heard many stories and read many articles wherein an individual would inject themself weekly with small amounts of venom to build immunities. I am interested in whether or not this would be regarded as safe, and also if this is fairly common amung venomous keepers and herpetologists.
