Sorry,

I appreciate that you are convinced you do the best for your PETS. But from the biological point of view, basilisks are NOT Pets. They have passed no time -in an evolutionary sense- to adapt to artificial environments you describe. They ARE adapted to their natural habitat. And their "intellectual" capabilities ARE limited as well as their potential to adapt to conditions which are deviant from their natural habitat. So they HAVE to be Display pets ("ornamnets") if you want to fulfil their need realistically. All that "obvious" additional freedom your animals seem to have does not change the faxt that they have to cope with conditions they are not adapted to by nature. I donīt think its wise to mention Green iguanas in this contex. There are very few "pet" animals which are more often severley mistreated or abused -often unintendedly- than green Igs. Despite their obvious elevated intelligence, even these "Einstein" Lizards are very limited with their capabilities to adapt to artificial surroundings which do not meet the situation they are adapted to from their natural habitat.
Although all these guys now live in "civilized" America, they by no means have adapted to that. In "civilized" America they should be still treated as if they were at home in central america. Everything else asks too much of them and I repeat: Can only stem form an anthrpomorphistic, anthropocentric point of view. I can not endorse that-even if I believe you, that you WANT their best. But you are NOT giving them the best possible conditions.
The wild ancestors of domestic cats BTW are NOT extinct. What happens If you raise a kitten of these egyptian cat in civilized america? Will it grow up like your standard house kitten, be tame and behave like its spoiled cousins? According to you, it certainly will. But beleive me: It wonīt! Once adult, it will behave exactly like its wild cousins in egypt and not like domesticated cats. So these cats have to be kept in apt desert setups in big enclosures.
How can you believe that basilisks, i.e. animals which are much less plastic in behaviour than any mammal, can adapt to "Pet" conditions in only a few generations, when wild Cats or-to give another example -wolves- are not able to do the same. Although they are the direct ancestors of "true" pets????
Believe me: You ARE doing things wrong and you ARE anthropocentric.
No offence-but its true!
If you do not believe me, ask any ethologist or professional herpetologist around the world.

Please think about it

Ingo
