:I got this device called ammo alert...it's a disk that you keep in the water all the time and it last for a year. It will tell you how the ammonia level is. (It was only $5 at herp supplies) And for nitrates I got the sticks...there is also PH tests and everything....it depends how far you want to take it and what type of filter system your using.
::I'm going to take a water sample down to the local pet store and have them test it for me (to expensive to buy the tests). Should I just have them test for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Also about where should these levels be and what should I do to adjust them if needed. Also can I add normal aquarium chemicals to the water. They have stuff to remove organic waste, something called enzyme starter and all that other kinda stuff. By the way this is for the wetland filter. Rick, if you do a FAQ, I think all this would be good info to add to it. I could probably help come up with a couple more for you also (as could the other couple of people on the board who just tried one of these filters as well.)

Its not uncomon for new setups to fluctuate at first, so you'll want to make several test over a period of a week or so to really see whats going on. Ammonia and nitrites are your primary concern. I am not sure what are concidered safe levels for a waterdragon, but basically in a well established filter they should be null or close to it. As for PH, this is largely dependant on your water source. Here in Maryland the tap water is generally very alkaline and tends to be more stable above 7.0. I would recomend that if you are going to test the PH that you also test your tap water, this will give you a baseline for comparison. Lets us know your results, Mine is clear of both ammonia and nitrites, but I did not test to see how long it takes for it to get established. Hopefully you will be able to give us some insight into that.
