the THS is one of the oldest herpetological societies in the nation, having been founded in 1939. its primary focus was originally to allow field-minded herpetologists an opportunity to go into the field together, usually with their students, in a fairly relaxed atmosphere, and to further the knowledge of the distribution and natural history of texas' herpetofauna. to this end, the society hosted and continues to host an annual spring field meet, usually held on a ranch property in an area of the state for which the herpetological diversity is poorly known.

historically, much of the membership has been academic and academically-minded amateurs. a look at past presidents, etc, will be like looking at a list of who's who in texas prefessinal herpetology.

beginning in the mid-70s, the THS also began hosting an annual symposium - presentations of professional papers, mostly focusing on texas herpetology.

we currently have an annual award of "grants-in-herpetology" funding research interested in Texas herps.

here's a link to the website (which i need to update).

Troy Hibbitts
Past President, THS
