heat tape......safe?

How safe is using heat tape vs. heat lights and store bought under tank heaters? Is there any fire hazard associated w/using heat tape? Risk of hot spots & burns? I'm looking into adding more heat for my guys....two durango mt kings (related to the grey bands), a red tail boa, and a bullsnake. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
