I think I remember seeing a paper in The Biology of the Pitvipers that had a section devoted to the tail-tip structure of other New-World Pit vipers. I think (if I remember correctly) that the author noted that the Bushmaster had what looked like a primitive button on its tail. I might have to look it up tomorrow when I'm back at the lab to make sure.
