there is an old african folk lore that goes something like this (abridged)

1God created all animals
2god had left overs so he made snake last with no limbs
3snake gets stepped on by everyone becasue he cant get away as fast as everyone else and nobody sees him
so he goes to god and asks for some help so god gives him venom
after he has venom he bites almost everyone and most die
they all get made at the snake and appeal to god for a better solution
god calls to the snake and gives him a rattle telling to rattle first as a warning then use the venom
all the animals are then happy

(these thoughts and recolections on this perticular folk tale is not neccessarily the beliefs of me)
