but isn't what you described just that, a warning signal that, due to genetic differences (flukes, quirks, what have you) that allowed for an advantage in the survival of that particular animal to pass its traits along. What am I doing explaining this to you? Evolution, plain and simple. But, my whole point is that there was an original reason, could be predator avoidance or large animal wandering about, but still a reason (= warning signal). Anyhow, from the title of your post, I thought you may be getting ready to say something along the lines of neutral theory for morphological adaptations. Then I thought the discussion was on! LOL. Good seeing that you still frequent the forums, I haven't been around for a while. By the way got the reprints recently, thanks.
