Everyone else gave you advice on parents, ordinance, temps etc (which all needed to be said), so I'll cover the actual species of snake...

Sidewinders can be a bit tricky. They are usually pretty snippy, and most will only take lizards in captivity. Over the years I have had quite a few of these little guys...some eat readily...some don't. Some will take rodents, some won't even take lizards. All in all I would say that the Sidewinder is not a good hot to start with. If you are looking to start keeping hots, get yourself a little Osage or Southern Copperhead. BEAUTIFUL snakes that take VERY well to captivity. Also, if God forbid, there is a mistake, you aren't going to die.
