A local breeder I know, (I got my first corn from him) doesn't switch the animals to different cages but switches around the cage contents between cages. This is basically the same thing if you think about it.

He thinks that if you do this, you are giving them a more interesting life, because they can smell each other.

As long as they are completely healthy I see no reason not to do it. Well, there is the possibility (that if they are a pair) the male will smell the female and stop eating with the hopes of mating.
