My mice always had an affinity for doing their business in their food bowl. Although I think it was just that bowl in particular. I moved it over to the corner, and they all started using it for their potty and I just put in another brand new food bowl.
Yeah, rodents sometimes eat their own waste. I think it's some mineral or nutrient they're lacking in their diet. Usually they'll not do it when you get one of those brown mineral wheels for them to lick.
