: Paul, I have heard now a number of people who have red eyed corn snakes that are NOT amelanistic, would this be another mutation and how would it manifest itself? The animals that I've heard of that have this red eyed feature are also mutants in other ways as well, would it be possible to have a "normal" corn with red eyes? or are the red eyes linked with another mutation?
Last year I saw some baby corns belonging to Shawn Lockhart that had pinkish eyes but were not amelanistic. IMHO, it's another mutation, possibly analogous to pinkeyed dilute in a number of vertebrates. This is a mutant that reduces the amount of melanin in the skin (without making the melanin totally absent) while turning the eyes pink. Hypomelanistic is pretty hard for me to detect unless it is combined with anerythristic into ghost. It's possible that the effects of this pinkeyed mutation are subtle enough that it's pretty hard to pick up without some other mutant being present to make the effects more obvious.
Thanks for reminding me of it. I'll have to add it to my list under the "needs work" category.
