:8" deep is a bit extreme...here is what I do...

:I put two bricks (standard sized brick in the corner of the tank, forming an "L" shape. In between this area, I fill it to the top of the bricks with sand (about 4" deep). Next, I put either a large terre cotte flower pot BASE, or a large flat rock over the bricks. Moisten the sand homogeneously...not dripping wet, and no dry spots. This gives her an adequate area with nice darkness. I use this method and it works very well.

:The female will stop eating a few days prior to eating, and you may see her spending more dig digging into the area. I add water to the area every few days, after checking dampness. When she finally lays, I try to remove the eggs asap, to get them in a safe incubator. Hope that helps you out.
