mini dripper not dripping into the cage

i have the mini dripper outside and on top of the cage. my problem is the dripping water just beads up on the mesh wire of the cage and doesn't drip into the cage. what is the trick to get it into the cage? do i need to spread the mesh out a bit to get the water into the cage and onto the plant?
